Animation With AI: What Your Child Can Make Hands-On

Your child has already seen an AI-generated video. On someone else’s phone, an animal doing something impossible. Then they ask: “Can I make one?”

Not with the tool they have in mind. The big text-to-video generators are built for adults, and their own terms set the age floors. That matters less than it sounds, because “make a video with AI” can mean several different things.

Maybe your child wants their drawing to come to life. Maybe they want a character to talk in their own voice, or a fun title card for a school project. Each one takes a different tool.

That’s why the table below is arranged by what your child wants to create rather than by product. Start with the idea, and the choice gets simple.

The best options for kids work the other way round from the adult tools. They start from your child’s own drawings and characters rather than a blank text box.

Why the famous ones are not on that list

Runway sets thirteen and requires a parent’s permission below eighteen. Sora sets thirteen with the same parental-permission rule, and reporting on its teen protections has found them thin, since a teenager can unlink a supervised account at will.

Age floors aside, an open box that turns any sentence into realistic video is close to the worst thing to hand a nine-year-old. Looking real is the entire product goal.

The part worth your attention is not whether your child makes such videos. It is that they will watch them. Realistic generated video is now ordinary on the platforms they already use, so the “could this be real, and how would we check” conversation matters more here than the tool question does. Teaching kids that AI can be wrong has demonstrations that work from about seven.

Animated Drawings

The standout, and the only one on this list a child can operate themselves.

Your child draws a character on paper, with arms and legs. You photograph it. Animated Drawings, a free browser demo from Meta’s research lab, finds the limbs and makes the drawing walk, jump, and dance. Nothing to install, no account.

The first time a child’s own wonky drawing gets up and walks is worth the setup on its own.

Safety note

This one requires uploading your child's drawing, which most projects on this site avoid. It is a drawing on paper, not a photograph of your child. And the retention is opt-in: there is a checkbox asking whether Meta may keep the image for research, and the demo works the same either way. Decline it.

That checkbox is not decorative. Meta has said 6.7 million images were uploaded to the demo, and it released nearly 180,000 of them as a public research dataset of amateur drawings. Everything in that dataset was contributed by someone who ticked the box.

Adobe Express, animate from audio

Your child records their voice, up to two minutes, and a character performs it: lip sync, head movements, arms, all generated from the audio. Adobe’s own walkthrough covers the steps, and the feature is free on web and mobile.

This is the one that turns a written story into a performance. Your child writes the lines, reads them with feeling, and watches a character deliver them back. Have them record the same line twice, once flat and once with expression, and compare. The animation exposes the difference immediately.

Canva for Education

Canva for Education animates elements inside a project rather than generating a video from nothing, and teachers can switch individual AI features off. Best when the animation serves something: a title card, a book report, an explainer. Families get the free tier through a teacher.

Who does which part

This is the question worth settling before you start, because the answer differs per tool.

  • Your child, hands on the keyboard: drawing the character, photographing it, pressing play in Animated Drawings, recording their voice, choosing the character and the background.
  • You, on your account: creating any login, uploading, and reading anything a tool asks you to agree to.
  • Nobody, yet: the open text-to-video generators. There is no version of those that a primary-age child drives.

That split is the same rule as everywhere else on the site: an adult stays present, owns the account, and follows the age requirement for the specific tool.

The one that is not AI, and is better

If your child wants to learn animation rather than trigger it, stop motion beats everything here.
