Turn Cooking Into a Fractions Lesson That Sticks

Fractions on a page are abstract. Fractions when you have a third-cup measure and the recipe says three quarters are urgent, and your child will work considerably harder on the second one.

How it goes

  1. Pick a forgiving recipe. Pancakes, flapjacks, soup. Not a soufflé.
  2. Change the quantity on purpose. Halve it, or make it for seven people when it serves four. This is what creates the maths.
  3. Ask for the version with the maths left in, using the prompt below.
  4. Hide the easy measures. Put away the half cup and leave the third. Now three quarters requires thinking.
  5. Your child does every calculation and writes it on the recipe before anything goes in the bowl.
  6. Eat it, then check. A flat pancake is a legitimate result and worth discussing.

The prompt

Here is a pancake recipe serving 4: [paste]. Rewrite it to serve 6 but do NOT do the arithmetic for me. Leave each quantity as a multiplication my 9-year-old must work out, like “1/2 cup times 1.5 = ?”. Add a note about which conversions are the tricky ones.

The instruction not to do the arithmetic is the whole prompt. Left alone, models solve it and hand over a finished recipe.

What a good result looks like

Every quantity should arrive as an unsolved multiplication: 1/2 cup times 1.5 = ?, 3 eggs times 1.5 = ?. If any line comes back with the answer already filled in, the whole exercise is gone; ask again and say so explicitly.

The note about tricky conversions should flag the ones that do not scale cleanly: eggs cannot be halved neatly, and cooking time does not scale at all. Those are the interesting ones and they are where the real conversation happens.

Check it before you use it

  • Do the multiplications yourself. Chatbots get recipe scaling wrong, and a wrong answer here ruins both the maths and the lunch.
  • Does it scale linearly? Baking powder, salt, and cooking times do not, which is a good conversation.
  • Safety. You handle the oven and any knife work.

Keep the human part

Standing beside your child while they decide whether two thirds is more or less than three quarters, with a bowl in front of them, is the lesson. The recipe is scaffolding.

If it is not working

If your child gets stuck on 3 times 1.5, put three eggs on the counter and ask what half of three looks like. Fractions become obvious with objects and stay abstract on paper, which is the entire reason for cooking them.

If the result is inedible, eat it anyway and work out which quantity was wrong afterwards. Reverse-engineering the error from a flat pancake is a better maths lesson than getting it right first time.

One thing to watch

Do not correct a wrong calculation before it goes in. A slightly wrong pancake teaches more than a corrected sum, provided the recipe is forgiving enough to survive it.
