Math Help That Explains Instead of Handing Over Answers

Math homework is where AI causes the most trouble at home, because a photographed problem comes back solved in four seconds and everyone can pretend that was help.

There are tools that do better. There are also prompts that turn a general chatbot into something closer to a tutor. Both are below, along with the thing chatbots do badly that surprises most parents.

Chatbots are worse at arithmetic than you expect

A language model predicts text. It is not running a calculator, and it will produce a wrong number with total composure. Long multiplication, multi-step word problems, unit conversions, and anything with several numbers to track are all places it slips.

This is worth showing your child rather than telling them. Ask a chatbot to multiply two four-digit numbers, then check it on a calculator. Do it three times. Tools that show their working

Khanmigo

Khanmigo, from Khan Academy, refuses to give the answer. Ask it to solve the problem and it asks your child what they would try first, then responds to that. Parent and teacher dashboards show the whole conversation, so you can see where the sticking point was.

The design goal matches the parenting goal here, which is rarer than it should be. If your child already uses Khan Academy, this is the first thing to try.

Photomath

Photomath reads a problem from a photo and lays out the solution step by step, with an explanation of the method at each step. It is a solver, so it will do the homework if asked, and the step-by-step view earns its place for a child stuck at one line of a longer problem.

Use it after an attempt, not instead of one. A rule that works: your child does the problem, gets it wrong, then uses Photomath to find which step went wrong. The app becomes a marker rather than a machine.

Wolfram Alpha

Wolfram Alpha computes from structured mathematics instead of predicting text, which makes it right about numbers in a way chatbots are not. Older kids can use it to check their own work and to see a problem represented as a graph, which sometimes unlocks a concept that words did not.

Prompts that keep a chatbot honest

If you are using a general chatbot on your account, these change what comes back:

Do not give me the answer. Ask me what I would do first, then respond to what I say.

I got 42 and the book says 46. Do not tell me the right answer. Tell me which step to look at again.

Explain this in a different way. I did not understand the first one.

Give me three problems like this one, without the answers.

That last one solves a real problem: a child who understands a method needs practice, and printable worksheets rarely match the exact thing they are stuck on.

The check that matters

Have your child explain it back. Not the answer, the method. If they can tell you why the denominator changed, the session worked. If they can only tell you what the answer was, it did not, whatever the tool said.

Talking to the teacher

Math homework policies vary more than any other subject. Some teachers want no AI at all, some want it for checking, some assign it. Ask, then hold that line at home rather than inventing your own.

A version that fits most classrooms: AI can explain, check, and generate practice. It does not produce the work that gets handed in.

When frustration is the actual problem

Sometimes the issue is not the math. It is 8pm, the sheet has twenty questions, and your child has decided they are bad at this. No tool fixes that. Stop, write a note to the teacher, and try in the morning.

A patient explainer helps most with a child who wants to understand and keeps hitting the same wall. It helps least with one who has stopped believing they can.
