5 Kid-Friendly AI Tools Worth Trying (and How We Judge Them)

“Which AI tools are actually okay for my kids?” is the question we get most, and it deserves a more honest answer than a listicle of whatever launched last week. So this roundup does two jobs: it gives you five tools that have earned a place in real homes and classrooms, and it gives you the checklist we used to pick them, so you can evaluate the next shiny thing yourself.
The six-question checklist
Before any AI tool gets near our recommendations, we ask:
- Who is it built for? Tools designed for children (or for schools) have different defaults than adult tools with a kids’ mode bolted on.
- What does it collect? Read the privacy policy for the words “personal information from children.” A good kids’ tool collects little and explains it plainly.
- Can an adult see the history? Parent or teacher visibility should be a feature, not a workaround.
- What happens when it fails? Every AI fails. Does it fail into silence, a gentle refusal, or something you wouldn’t want on screen?
- Does it invite creation or just consumption? The best tools make kids authors, engineers, and editors, not just audiences.
- Is there a business reason to keep your child hooked? Ad-driven engagement loops and children are a bad mix.
A tool doesn’t need a perfect score. But if you can’t answer questions 2 and 3, walk away.
1. Khanmigo (Khan Academy), ages 8–12
Khanmigo, the AI tutor from Khan Academy, is the strongest example of AI built for learning rather than answer-vending. It’s deliberately Socratic: ask it to solve a math problem and it nudges your child through the steps instead of handing over the result. Parent and teacher dashboards show conversation history, and it sits inside Khan Academy’s existing courses, so the AI is anchored to real curriculum.
Good fit when: your child already uses Khan Academy, or you want homework help that can’t be quietly converted into homework doing.
2. Google Teachable Machine, ages 8–12 (5–7 with help)
Not a chatbot at all, and that’s the point. Teachable Machine lets kids train a real machine-learning model in the browser: show the webcam two hand gestures, label them, and watch the computer learn to tell them apart. No account needed, nothing stored by default, and it delivers the single most important AI lesson there is: the machine learns from examples, and bad examples make a confused machine.
Good fit when: you want a screen activity that’s genuinely educational, or your child asks “but how does AI actually work?”
3. Machine Learning for Kids, ages 8–12
Machine Learning for Kids is a free project site that connects simple model-training to Scratch, the block-based coding language many kids already know. Kids train a model (recognizing compliments vs. insults, sorting animal pictures) and then use it inside their own game. Built by a long-standing IBM volunteer project with teachers in mind, with classroom management for grown-ups.
Good fit when: your child has outgrown watching and wants to build. Pairs beautifully with an existing Scratch habit.
4. Socratic by Google, ages 10–12
Socratic is a homework-help app: photograph a question, get explanations, videos, and step breakdowns sourced from the open web. It’s closer to a smart search engine than a chatbot, which makes it a gentler on-ramp for the homework-help years. Supervision still matters, since the answers come from the web, with everything that implies.
Good fit when: your ten-to-twelve-year-old needs concept help and you’d rather they start somewhere more structured than a general chatbot.
5. Canva for Education, ages 8–12, classroom-first
Canva for Education ships AI features (image generation, writing assistance) inside an education environment where admins and teachers control which AI features are on. For families, the free classroom tier via a teacher is the best route. The AI stays a creative assistant inside a real project (a poster, a comic, a presentation) rather than the main event.
Good fit when: a teacher runs it, or your child loves making things and you want AI to stay in a supporting role.
What didn’t make the list
General-purpose chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are absent not because they’re bad tools but because they’re adult tools: their terms set a floor of 13 for ChatGPT and Gemini and 18 for Claude, and their defaults assume an adult reader. For a supervised family activity with a younger child, use a parent’s account, together, under your family ground rules.
Also absent: AI “companion” apps marketed at kids. They fail question 6 badly, and we don’t recommend any of them.
