Make Sound Effects for a Homemade Puppet Show

Radio drama solved this in the 1930s with a tray of gravel and half a coconut. Your kitchen has better equipment than that, and a child running the sound desk is the happiest job in the show.

Ages 5 to 11

Time One afternoon

You'll need Socks or paper bags for puppets, kitchen junk, a tray, and a chatbot on your account

How it goes

  1. Write the show first, or use a story your child already has. Five minutes is long enough.
  2. Mark the cues. Read the script together and put a star wherever a sound should happen. Door, footsteps, storm, the monster.
  3. Ask the AI how to make each one from household things: How do I make the sound of heavy rain using things in a normal kitchen? Give me three options. This is a good use of a chatbot: lots of options, low stakes, easy to test.
  4. Test every suggestion. Half will not work. Finding out which half is the actual project, and it beats any answer being right first time.
  5. Build the sound tray. One object per cue, laid out in script order so the operator can find them.
  6. Run the show. Puppets over the back of the sofa, sound operator crouched beside with the tray.

Who does what

AI suggests ways to fake a sound, which saves half an hour of staring at a cupboard.

Your child marks the cues, tests every idea, rejects the ones that sound wrong, and runs the tray during the show.

You hold up a puppet and take direction.

Make it easier or harder

For a four-year-old: four cues, not twelve, and let them be loud ones. A door, a storm, a monster, and a crash are all achievable with a tray of junk and produce more delight than subtlety does.

For an eleven-year-old: require one sound that has to be made twice at different volumes, near and far. Working out that the same object rattled gently and then hard reads as distance is exactly the trick radio drama runs on, and discovering it is genuinely satisfying.

Take it off the screen

Everything after step three is off the screen and loud. Record the show as audio only and play it back in the car, where a family radio play holds up better than you would expect.

Swap jobs and run it again. The sound operator always wants a turn with the puppets.

When it goes sideways

The tray gets out of order during the show and the operator misses a cue. Lay the objects out left to right in script order and number them with sticky notes before starting. It looks over-organised and it is the difference between a show and a shambles.

If a suggested sound does not work, keep it in the tray anyway and find out what it does sound like. A failed rainstorm that turns out to be a convincing fire is a better discovery than a successful rainstorm.

One thing to watch

Some suggestions will involve boiling water, snapping celery near a face, or a bag of rice on the good floor. Read the list before your child starts testing. Chatbots do not know what your kitchen or your five-year-old is like, which is a useful thing to say out loud while you read.
