Plan and Build a Backyard Weather Station

The instruments take an afternoon. The fortnight of readings afterwards is the part that turns a craft project into science, and it costs nothing but a notebook by the back door.

Ages 7 to 12

Time An afternoon to build, then two minutes a day for a fortnight

You'll need A plastic bottle, a ruler, card, a straw, a pin, a pencil with an eraser, and a chatbot on your account

How it goes

  1. Ask what a weather station measures and let your child choose three. Rain, wind direction, and temperature are the achievable ones.
  2. Get build instructions, then question them: How do I make a rain gauge from a plastic bottle? Then tell me two things that would make my readings wrong. The second half is the good half.
  3. Build the instruments. A bottle with the top cut off and inverted for rain; card fins on a pin through a pencil eraser for wind.
  4. Site them properly. Under the tree is wrong, and working out why is a genuine bit of experimental design.
  5. Read them at the same time every day and write it in a notebook. Same time matters.
  6. After a fortnight, look for a pattern and compare against a weather site. Where you disagree, work out which is wrong and why.

Who does what

AI explains how instruments work, suggests builds, and helps interpret a pattern once there is real data to interpret.

Your child builds, sites, reads, records daily, and compares against the forecast.

You remember the notebook at breakfast for the first three days until it becomes a habit.

Make it easier or harder

For a six-year-old: rain only, read once a day, recorded as a coloured square on a chart rather than a number. Fourteen coloured squares is a data set and it shows a pattern just as well.

For a twelve-year-old: add a control. Two rain gauges, one in the open and one under the edge of the tree, read at the same time. Comparing two sites turns a measurement into an experiment about siting, which is the thing meteorologists actually argue about.

Take it off the screen

The fortnight of readings is the project. Plot them on squared paper by hand rather than a spreadsheet; drawing a graph badly teaches more than generating a clean one.

Extend it to a year with one reading a week and you have a data set nobody else has.

When it goes sideways

The fortnight is where this dies, usually around day four. Put the notebook where the reading happens rather than in a drawer, tie the pencil to it, and take the reading at a fixed anchor point in the day such as immediately after breakfast.

If a day gets missed, write “missed” rather than guessing. A record with three gaps and honest labels is scientifically better than a complete one with invented numbers in it, and saying that out loud matters more than the data.

One thing to watch

A chatbot will happily tell your child what the weather is doing, which is not measuring. The point of this project is that the notebook beats the model, because the notebook is about your garden. When the two disagree, back the notebook and go and check the gauge.
