Ask AI for an Experiment, Then Actually Test It

Ask a chatbot what will happen and it will tell you with complete confidence. Ask your kitchen and it will tell you the truth. Running both and comparing is the most useful science lesson a family can do in an hour.

How it goes
- Say what you have, not what you want. I have bicarbonate of soda, vinegar, washing-up liquid, food colouring, and a muffin tin. Give me three experiments and say what each one demonstrates.
- Read every suggestion before your child acts on it. This step is not optional; see the safety note.
- Write down the prediction in the notebook, before doing anything. Ask the AI what will happen and copy the answer down word for word.
- Your child writes their own prediction underneath. Two predictions, one notebook, neither of them verified.
- Do the experiment and write down what actually happened.
- Compare all three. Where the machine was wrong, your child gets to write “wrong” next to it in pen, which they enjoy enormously.
Who does what
AI suggests experiments and makes a prediction that can be checked.
Your child predicts, runs the experiment, records the result, and marks both predictions.
You read the suggestions first, supervise anything wet or sharp, and resist telling them the answer.
Make it easier or harder
For a five-year-old: make the prediction a drawing rather than a sentence. Two pictures side by side, what I think will happen and what happened, is a complete scientific record at that age.
For a twelve-year-old: insist on a measurement rather than a description. Not “it fizzed a lot” but “the foam reached 6cm in 4 seconds”. Numbers turn a demonstration into something repeatable, and repeating it with one thing changed is the next hour.
Take it off the screen
The notebook is the artefact. Three columns, one page per experiment: what the machine said, what I said, what happened. A dozen pages of that is a genuine record of a child learning what evidence is.

When it goes sideways
If the experiment does nothing at all, do not move on. A flat result is usually a proportion problem, and asking what to change is a better question than asking for a different experiment. Halve the water, double the bicarbonate, run it again.
If the machine’s prediction turns out right every time, raise the difficulty. Ask it to predict something involving a number or a time rather than a direction, and the disagreements start appearing again.
One thing to watch
Chatbots suggest combinations no adult should hand a child, including things that produce heat or fumes. Read the list yourself before your child sees it, keep to the food cupboard, and skip anything involving bleach, ammonia, or a naked flame.
