Design a Fantasy Treehouse or Dream Bedroom

The good part of this project is not the picture. It is your child jabbing a finger at the screen saying the slide is on the wrong side, because that means they had a plan.

Ages 6 to 12

How it goes

  1. Floor plan first, on paper. Boxes and labels, drawn by your child. Where you sleep, where the food is, how you get in.
  2. Write the specification. Six to ten short lines: “a rope bridge to a second tree,” “a hatch in the floor for the dog,” “a window that faces sunrise.” This is a technical writing exercise and kids love it.
  3. Turn the spec into a prompt and generate the picture.
  4. Print it and mark it up in red pen. What did it get wrong? What did it miss? Most children find five errors in thirty seconds, which is a better critical-thinking exercise than any worksheet.
  5. Rewrite the spec to fix the misses and generate once more. Two rounds is plenty; a third gets tedious.
  6. Your child draws the final version by hand, using the picture as reference rather than a template.

Who does what

AI renders the spec quickly enough that revising it feels worth doing.

Your child plans, specifies, critiques in red pen, revises, and draws the version that goes on the wall.

You print, hand over the red pen, and ask “what’s missing” instead of pointing.

Make it easier or harder

For a five-year-old: skip the written specification and let them describe the treehouse out loud while you type it as a list. The red-pen critique still works, and finding five things wrong in a picture is achievable long before writing a spec is.

For a twelve-year-old: add a constraint that forces trade-offs. The tree can hold two hundred kilos, or there is no mains water, or it must survive a storm. A design with no limits is a wish list; a design with one hard limit is engineering.

Take it off the screen

Build it. Cardboard, sticky tape, a shoebox for the main room, straws for the rope bridge. The floor plan is already drawn, so this is a straight build rather than an invention problem.

For a bigger version, mark the treehouse footprint out on the lawn with string and walk around inside it at full size.

When it goes sideways

The second generation often fixes the thing you asked for and breaks something that was right the first time. Say so directly rather than starting again: Keep everything from the last image but move the rope bridge to the left-hand tree. Incremental instructions work better than fresh descriptions.

If your child cannot find anything wrong with the picture, prompt with the floor plan rather than with hints. Put the two side by side and ask which rooms are missing. The plan does the criticising for you.

One thing to watch
