Design a Future City With Homes, Transport, and Power

Children design brilliant cities with flying cars and no drains. The questions are what turn a drawing into a plan, and a chatbot is patient enough to keep asking them.

How it goes
- Choose the hard part first. Somewhere difficult: on water, in a desert, underground, very cold. Constraints make better cities than blank ground.
- Your child draws the map. Where people live, where food comes from, where they work.
- Let the AI be the awkward inspector. I am designing a city in a desert. Ask me one question at a time about water, power, food, transport, and waste. Do not solve anything for me. Watching a ten-year-old realise nobody has thought about sewage is worth the whole afternoon.
- Redraw after each answer. The map changes shape as the answers land, which is exactly what happens to real plans.
- Pick one system and detail it. Only the water, or only the transport, drawn properly with labels.
- Build a block of it from boxes and card.
Who does what
AI asks the systems questions that a grown-up would need a planning degree to think of unprompted.

Make it easier or harder
For a six-year-old: design one street rather than a city, and ask about three things only: where the water comes from, where the rubbish goes, and how you get to school. A street is drawable in an afternoon and the systems questions still land.
For a twelve-year-old: give the city a population number and hold them to it. Ten thousand people need a quantity of water, a number of homes, and somewhere to put the sewage, and doing that arithmetic badly is far more instructive than drawing a beautiful map with no numbers on it.
Take it off the screen
Build one city block at model scale on a tabletop, with a transport line running through it. Cereal boxes, kitchen roll tubes, and a lot of tape.
Walk your own neighbourhood afterwards and find where the real answers are: the drains, the substation, the bins. Kids who have designed a city notice infrastructure for the first time.
When it goes sideways
If the inspector questions overwhelm rather than provoke, cap them. Five questions, chosen by you from its list, one at a time with a redraw between each. Twenty systems questions in one sitting will close down a ten-year-old.
If your child solves everything with a technology that does not exist, accept it once and then ask what happens when it breaks. Designing the backup for an imaginary machine is a real engineering habit and it usually sends them back to the map.
One thing to watch
Ask about energy and your child will get confident numbers. Some will be wrong. Send anything numerical to Wolfram Alpha or a library book before it goes on the plan, and treat the chatbot as the thing that raises questions rather than the thing that answers them.
